Health Supplements

Health supplements are an umbrella term for many different vitamins, minerals, herbs, and drugs. To be considered a health supplement a substance must not be a drug intended to cure or prevent a specific condition, such as medicine to control your blood pressure. In fact, the disclaimer “this product is not intended to treat or prevent any disease or illness” is common on many health supplements. This is in keeping with the FDA’s regulation of health supplements as food, and not as drugs.

Don’t let that fact dissuade you from trying health supplements though! The fact is that while you don’t take a health supplement to cure cancer, they offer a host of benefits and can aid you in trouble spots in your life. For instance there are supplements to help you if you have trouble sleeping regularly, or supplements to boost energy.  Looking for mood enhancers? They have those too! Another great thing about health supplements is that because they are not medicine, they have low incidence of side effects and are not prone to overdosing. That’s not to say you won’t get sick if you go eat an entire bottle of multivitamins, you certainly will! But they do not stress your body out the way many medications do.

And that’s just the herbal side of health supplements. Vitamins and minerals are ideal for people who eat less than healthy diets and may be lacking in essential nutrients. Many times things such as low energy or trouble sleeping stem from a simple dietary imbalance that could easily be solved by taking a vitamin supplement.
